He has loudly announced. "Wid", it sounds from the sky. "This is bibi", says ibolyka pickel. That’s how she christened the little swallow man who, together with his partner, ribi, lives in the "kuli" pub in zeil coarsens its young.
Ibolyka pickel runs into the corridor behind her inn. Upstairs, on the power cable of the hall lamp, six young swallows are sitting in a row, already in slumber mode. The mother squats on a copper pipe behind it. The father has not joined yet. "He is in the beer garden", says ibolyka pickel and laughs. The 61-year-old points to the red-throated birdman sitting on a light garland under the pavilion and looks a little perplexed because someone is stalking him to within a meter with a strange clicking device. "He doesn’t mind", says the hostess. But to be on the safe side she asks again: "or, bibi?" – "wid wid." (probably: "photos? If my wife finds out!" – but the female it langst, she sits only a few meters away from it and thinks her part).
Red throat, forked tail
The guests of the inn often take photos when they notice the family of swallows, the hostess tells them. The animals remain sitting there quite cool. "Such behavior is normal", explains dietmar will. Swallows are used to people, as cultural successors they even seek their proximity, says the biologist and bird expert from habfurt.
Based on the photos he identifies the species: "it is indeed the rarer barn swallow". Well recognizable by the metallic-red throat and the deeply forked tail", he explains. Rarely, because the number of nesting places for the animals has steadily declined in recent years. "Barn swallows like it warm. With the old cowsheds most of their nesting places disappeared", explains dietmar will. It’s all the better when they find nesting sites like the beer garden in the "kuli" pier can use.
Regular guests for 17 years
The swallows have been here for 17 years, says ibolyka pickel, and the animals come back every year. Even if it is long several generations, which are in the "kuli" the landlady always keeps the names: ribi and bibi she calls the parents in every new breeding season.
In spring, the migratory birds from africa return to their ancestral nesting places, they are faithful to their location and "very industrious", ibolyka has observed pimples. With the sunrise the birds fly out and go hunting. In the evening, around 9 pm, they come back to their shelter one by one, in bad weather also earlier.
They use clay and straw to build their nests, and they look for both in the surrounding area. "Mudpuppies are a rarity today, not only because of the frequent drought", explains dietmar will. "As a substitute, smoke swallows like to take the sediment of streams such as the altach. This, however, lacks the clay content, so that many nests are not stable enough." They feed mainly on insects such as snails and other bipeds, which the agile swallows catch in flight.
Speaking of flight: in the fall, the birds once again make the long journey to africa. For ibolyka pickel a wistful moment: "i am then sad for a whole week." But she knows: her friends will come back.
